tHE gREAT MIAMI'S ENDURING POWER
I am in thesis for my Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in photography. My thesis features a five chapter coffe table book of 5 chapters and is an ongoing work.
Chapter 1: A Storied Shoreline: Historical context, remnants of past industries, flood markers, old bridges, how the river shaped settlement and history, such as the flood of 1913 that took nearly 500 lives.
Chapter 2: "The River’s Pulse” Focus: The river's physical presence, power, flow, source, and natural beauty across the watershed. Establishing the baseline.
Chapter 3: “The Change of Nature” Focus: Drastic Weather Changes for beauty, danger, and damage they cause.
Chapter 4: “Lifeblood and Boundary” Human interaction and imprint – towns, cities, agriculture, industry, recreation, infrastructure (dams, levees), how communities live alongside the river, and tragedy, such as the story of Ellie Carder.
Chapter 5: “An Altered Flow” Focus: Documenting change – urbanization sprawl, effects of climate change, pollution concerns, development pressures. The tension between nature and progress.
MY INSPIRATIONS
My largest personal influence and inspiration has always been Richard Avedon; however, given that he is a portrait and fashion photographer, I am relying more on inspiration from Edward Weston, Ansel Adams, Matt Kenna, and Trey Ratcliff for this project. When photographing landscapes, I often use the group 64 method in my work. Given modern camera technology, of course, the extreme of f/64 is not needed for the full shot to be in focus. Still, I use a large depth of field when shooting landscapes most of the time because I feel having the whole scene in focus, mainly in this project, provides a more immersive experience.
